A century after the iconic Observer Building first opened, its long-forgotten rooftop is being reclaimed – not just as a bar, but as a bold new community space in the sky.
The Observatory, a striking new rooftop bar and street food venue, opens to the public on 9 August 2025 for five weeks, offering panoramic views over Hastings and the Channel from the top of one of the town’s most beloved heritage buildings.
Open Friday to Sunday, 12 noon–10pm, The Observatory summer pop-up blends seasonal street food, craft cocktails, and live events with a unique social mission: all profits go directly to fund Hastings Youth Commons, Hastings Commons’ programme for local young people aged 11-18.
Located seven storeys above America Ground, The Observatory crowns the Observer Building, which has been undergoing a multi-phase, community-led restoration since its purchase by Hastings Commons Neighbourhood Ventures in 2019. The building’s roof, previously sealed off for decades, has been transformed into a vibrant, accessible terrace space complete with bar, café seating, and a panoramic viewing deck.
The venue reflects Hastings Commons’ wider mission: to return historic buildings to public use in ways that are inclusive, sustainable, and locally rooted. The launch of The Observatory marks another milestone in the transformation of the Observer Building, which now also houses affordable workspaces, event venue, a creative tech hub (OBX), and will soon include capped-rent housing.
“QUOTE FROM JENNI CARBINS, Hastings Commons Trustee –“This is a unique space, rescued by local people from decades of dereliction and now in the process of coming to life as a destination where profits are ring-fenced to support local youth work through the Hastings Youth Commons. “
The venue will feature street food vendors Troika, a local trio known for their stone-baked pizza, and a summer cocktail menu developed by local mixologist Tia.
Visitors are encouraged to take part in The Observatory’s “Share Your View” competition by posting their photos from the rooftop on Instagram, with prizes for the best entries. The venue is also available for private hires, collaborations, and pop-up cultural programming.
With its blend of heritage, hospitality, and hope, The Observatory invites Hastings to see itself differently – from above.
