Hastings Commons wins a Pineapples Award

astings Commons has been awarded a Golden Pineapple and a joint first place position for ‘Place in Progress’. The prestigious Pineapples awards recognise built and future projects and initiatives that make a positive impact on places and people. This year there were 110 projects shortlisted across 18 award categories.

The Pineapples awards for place were launched in 2019 by The Developer and have grown to recognise excellence in every stage of the development, design and delivery of placemaking, from community engagement to Place of the Year. The pineapple is an historic symbol of welcome in UK architecture, a fact that inspired the awards and its iconic golden pineapple trophy.

Hastings Commons were awarded a ‘Place in Progress’ award for their work transforming 8,000m² of vacant buildings within the White Rock area of Hastings into affordable homes, capped-rent workspaces, and community facilities – all while preserving the area’s architectural heritage. The judges commended the project for “its generosity”, its “grassroots engagement” and said that we “set a new benchmark for community-led initiatives”.

Hastings Commons wants to thank all those involved in the project: IF_DO, Purcell, Max Fordham LLP, Simple Works, CTP Consulting Engineers and all the Commoners and Community Land Trust members that make up the Commons.
